We left Cat Island around 4 pm to make our way to San Salvador Island.  This would be our last stop in The Bahamas.  We wanted to get into the marina at high tide and daylight.  It was a pretty uneventful motor sail until we were about 10 miles out.  Our autopilot began having problems and we could not hand steer very well.  I took the helm and Dave quickly went downstairs to asses the situation.

Once Dave got down into the compartment he quickly saw that the steering gearbox had separated and needed to be reattached.  While he did that I contacted a container ship to let them know we had steering issues.  I told him we were currently fixing it and did not need help.  I just wanted them to be aware so they didn’t get to close to us.  He was very friendly and changed course to completely avoid where we were.  Dave got the problem fixed relatively quick and we were back on our way.

We arrived at Riding Rock Resort and Marina at around 8 am.  It is a small marina that the owner’s a brother and sister Kevin and Michelle Williams has slowly been building up.  They do a lot of diving tours and a couple of fishing regattas.  After getting tied up we took the dogs for a quick walk, then took a much-needed nap.

Later, we explored the island a bit and did a bunch of boat chores getting us ready for our 5 + day passage to Puerto Rico.  We were now just waiting on a weather window.

The island has a club med and gets a lot of tourists from Canada that fly in several times a week.  There is a fun little strip with restaurants and bars by the immigration office and then some grocery stores in town.  That is about the extent of exploring we did.  The time was focused on getting us ready for the Puerto Rico passage

While we were there we met a fantastic couple Tom and Susan Vanderp0ool on the boat MV Vision.   A floating vessel that does eye exams and makes glasses for kids in the Bahamas.  They have been going to all the different islands in the Bahamas.  Check out their website by clicking here.  It is a great charity and they are a really nice couple.  They are also traveling with their son Max and puppy.  We enjoyed chatting and getting to know them while we were there.

We worked so much on the boat we did not explore as much as we would have liked to.  Another time

Our weather window had arrived for the next day.  Time to head to Puerto Rico.  We really enjoyed our last stop in The Bahamas. But, we are ready to continue south for some new adventures.

I have included pictures below of our short stay.

It’s onto Puerto Rico!!
