We are always looking to learn more to prepare ourselves for becoming liveaboards.  One of the big challenges living on a boat is storage, and the galley is no exception.  Especially refrigeration storage.  My husband found a guide that he purchased called Storing Food without Refrigeration by The Boat Galley’s Carolyn Shearlock.  Today I am going to review that guide.  I want to disclose that this is my opinion, I was not given the book or paid for my review.  I just wanted to share it with all of you.
This guide is actually very in-depth more like a book. You really get a lot of information packed into it.   To be short and sweet BUY THIS GUIDE if you live on a boat, RV, or tiny home.  This is such a GREAT and valuable guide.   Here is why I think so.

Pros

1.  It is laid out very well with her Table of Contents.  If you need to reference it quickly you can peek at the table of contents and be on the page that you need very quickly.
2.  She covers A LOT of information.  Not only covering storing the food, but she also talks about buying food, using coolers and setting them up for storing food.
3. A resource page is included where you can purchase most of the items that she discusses.  I especially like this because I find it frustrating when people tell you about a product but not where to buy it.   Sometimes you can’t find it or it takes awhile to hunt it down.  She takes the work out of it for you and has it all listed on her resource page.
4. She also includes a quick reference instant-read thermometer temperatures sheet which I find super handy.
5. In my opinion, she goes into great depth on each of her topics, what she recommends, where to buy and best ways to store.  On top of that, she also covers how long you can expect certain food items like fruit and produce to last and how to extend their life.
6. I love that fact that she gives you tips on how to keep your canned meats from turning into a “blob” of food.  This is a big issue with why many people don’t like canned meats as she discusses.
7. In the back of the guide, there is a “putting it all together section”.  It comes with a sample 4 day meal plan.  I love this because sometimes when you finish reading something you can become overwhelmed on how to implement it.  This plan helps you get going and put it to use right away.
8. Being able to keep it as a downloadable file to pull up on your tablet helps save more space (that you may not have).

Cons

I really tried to go through and find some cons about this guide and to be honest I didn’t find any.  The one thing I think she could add for future updates would be a section on using a food saver for storing of food.

In Conclusion

I did print mine out and I actually laminated it and put it in a binder.   Now, I can access it whenever I need it and it won’t get damaged by water.  Storing Food without Refrigeration will definitely be on my boat.  I hope this review has been helpful to you and you enjoyed it.  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments in the comment section below.  If you enjoyed my review and would like to purchase this guide click here Storing Food without Refrigeration
