While we really enjoyed Kodachrome Basin, it was time to head out for Our Last Stop in Utah, Zion National Park. We pulled out at 8:41 am and stopped along the way at some beautiful sights and took photos. We were able to get a site at the Watchman campground inside the park, which we were pretty excited about.
Tunnel
When we got to Zion we had to pay a tunnel permit fee and detach the car to get the motorhome through the tunnel. You pay $15 which covers you to go through the tunnel and back out within 7 days. Once you get to the second tunnel they stop traffic when it is your turn. Then, you go through the tunnel right down the center, this way you don’t scrape your mirrors or worse. It was also a good thing that we detached the car because there are a lot of switchbacks and it’s easier to have it disconnected.
Watchman
After getting set up at our campsite we decided to have a down day and just relax, play dominos, grill, and hang out. It was a nice afternoon. We also planned what hikes we would do the next day.
The next morning I was walking Izzy around the park when we were confronted by a very large male mule deer. Another lady at the campsite across from me said “he was quite aggressive and to turn and go the other way”. He started to charge us as we were turning away and we quickly got out of the area. He and the mother were protecting a baby that was in the bushes.
After that excitement, we did a small hike and moved the camper over one spot to another sight. I had to book to different sights in order to get us into the park for two days. Set up and noticed there were even more fire ants at this site than at the last.
Before we knew it Sadie was yelping and when we brought her in the camper we found a fire ant biting her inside her paw. The poor girl had a reaction to the bite and had to keep off her foot for a bit. Our poor sweet Sadie that fire ant got her several times.
Canyon Overlook Trail
Later in the day once we were sure Sadie was feeling better we went out for a short hike. We originally had planned on doing a hike with the pups but now, we needed to leave them to rest. We chose a short hike instead so we didn’t leave them long. Canyon Overlook trail was a little less than a 2-mile round trip hike. It was a beautiful hike with breathtaking views. One that I recommend if you visit Zion. During our visit, a lot of the other hikes were closed due to COVID and with Sadie, we didn’t want to do more. Next time we will explore farther in.
Zion is a beautiful park, it was Utah’s first national park and now part of the Zion Forever Project. This project is meant to raise awareness and preserve the park for future generations. We only scratched its surface, but another time.
Well, tomorrow we head to Vegas to drop our dear friends off.
Cheers,
Jill
