Today we are heading back for Yellowstone National Park Day 2! We are first heading to see the Mud Volcano and Dragon’s Mouth. Yesterday was great seeing all the geysers, but today we are heading to a different area in the park.   If you missed it you can click here.  We all got in the car and headed into Yellowstone. First, stop The Mud Volcano.

Mud Volcano

The mud volcano is essentially a bubbling pool of mud. It looks pretty cool.  It does have a pretty strong sulfur odor.  Before Yellowstone became a park this mud Volcano was spuing mud high into the air.  Over time it blew itself apart and is what you see today.  It was really neat watching all the mud bubbling and if it wasn’t for the strong odor you could stand there for quite a while.  The Dragon’s Mouth was also pretty cool. When you walk up to it you see this steam and boiling water pouring out of the cave.   You hear and feel a bit of shaking and noise like a dragon would make when he breathes. It is quite fascinating. Unfortunately, I didn’t record the noise so you will just have to visit to hear it yourself.

Bison

On our way to see the upper and lower falls, we got stopped by a large herd of buffalo crossing the road. It was like we were in Buffalo traffic.  It was neat, I was able to snap some great close-ups with my camera.  One of the Buffalo got pretty close and the pups got pretty excited.  We tried to keep them calm, so we didn’t upset the Buffalo.  That was a tough job.  I couldn’t believe all of the Buffalo, such a beautiful sight.

Upper and Lower Falls

The next and last stop was to see the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Up there was the Upper and Lower Falls. They are beautiful and very dramatic waterfalls.  The lower falls are the most dramatic of the two.  It has a drop of 308 feet.  The upper falls are quite a bit smaller of a drop at 109 feet.  The reason for the difference as stated by the national parks is that the lower falls go over more erosion-resistant rock.  While the upper falls are altered hydrothermally.  It doesn’t change their beauty from where we stood.  Amazing, and the canyon was just as impressive.  In case you are curious the body of water is the Yellowstone River.

Well, I hope you enjoyed today’s post on our second day at Yellowstone.  What a beautiful day it was.  On a sidebar,  I have been working on ways to better display my photos. As you can see above I have put them into slideshows.  I have received feedback asking to make them easier to see.  I would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section.   What do you think of the slideshow?  Easier to see or harder?  I am always trying to make the blog easier to view and more enjoyable.

Cheers,

Jill
